President John Quincy Adams
President
Quotations:
On March 4th 1825, he was inaugurated as President and served one
term. His inaugural address closed with these words:
"Knowing that 'except the Lord keep the city, the watchman
waketh but in vain,' with fervent supplications for His favor,
to His overruling providence I commit, with humble, but fearless
confidence, my own fate, and the future destinies of my
country."
In a letter to his son, which was published in the New York
Tribune, John Quincy Adams proclaimed his faith in God and the Bible
by writing . . .
"I have myself for many years made it a practice to read through
the Bible once every year. I have always endeavored to read it with
the same spirit and temper of mind which I now recommend to you;
that is, with the intention and desire that it contribute to my
advancement in wisdom and virtue ... My custom is, to read four or
five chapters every morning, immediately after rising form my bed.
It employs about an hour of my time, and seems to me the most
suitable manner of beginning the day."
He also wrote a number of hymns and devotional poems. One of his
hymns is based on Psalm 67:
O GOD, with goodness all thy own,
In mercy cause thy face to shine;
So shall thy ways on earth be known,
Thy saving health and power divine:
O, let the gladdening nations sing,
And praise thy name with hallowed mirth,
For thou of righteousness art King,
And rulest all the subject earth.
O, let the people praise the Lord;
The people all thy praise express;
And earth her plenty shall afford,
And God, yea, our own God, shall bless;
Our God his blessing shall bestow;
His power, his goodness, shall appear;
And all the ends of earth shall know
And worship him with holy fear.
